What Goes Into Getting the Right Extinguisher

Picking an extinguisher isn’t just grabbing whatever’s cheapest. The process follows NFPA 10’s hazard classification and travel distance rules.

  • Site assessment to identify hazard classification (Class A, B, C, K) for each area of the property
  • Correct agent type selected: ABC dry chemical, CO2, Class K wet chemical, clean agent, or water
  • Unit sized to the property’s floor area and NFPA 10’s maximum travel distance requirements
  • Mounting height and bracket placement set to code, not just wherever’s convenient
  • Accessibility checked so the unit isn’t blocked by furniture, inventory, or equipment
  • New unit tagged with installation date and documentation left on file

A property with the wrong extinguisher type for its hazard class fails inspection even if the unit itself is brand new. Getting the classification right at install avoids that.
