What Happens During 6-Year Maintenance

This goes well beyond the annual inspection. The unit is fully taken apart, not just checked over.

  • Extinguisher completely disassembled, not just opened for a visual check
  • Internal shell inspected for corrosion, cracking, or damage not visible from outside
  • O-rings, gaskets, and other wear components replaced
  • Internal components inspected and cleaned before reassembly
  • Agent replaced with fresh material to the manufacturer’s specification
  • Unit reassembled to factory specification and pressure tested
  • New 6-year maintenance label applied alongside the current inspection tag

This service is required on the 6-year interval whether or not the extinguisher has ever been used. Visual condition alone doesn’t tell the whole story on internal wear.

Agent Can Settle or Degrade

O-rings and valve seals degrade with age regardless of whether the extinguisher has ever been discharged.

Required on a Fixed Schedule

NFPA 10 sets this interval from the manufacture date, not from purchase or last service.

The annual inspection is an external check with a tag and report. 6-year maintenance is a full internal teardown, inspection, and reassembly, required every six years regardless of visual condition.
Yes. The 6-year interval applies to stored-pressure extinguishers regardless of whether they’ve ever been discharged.
It’s based on the manufacture date stamped on the unit, checked and tracked as part of routine inspections.
If a unit is also due for hydrostatic testing, that can be coordinated in the same service window to minimize disruption.
Any unit with damage found during teardown that can’t be safely returned to service is flagged for replacement.
